Arkansas Tech is one of only fourteen public institutions in the United States to offer a B.F.A. in Creative Writing. Established over forty years ago, Tech's B.F.A. provides a foundation of writing skills, editing techniques, literary analysis and advanced composition work to assist student writers in finding their unique voices. Practical experience and training in editing, layout and marketing prepare students for writing careers in the digital world. Enrollment in poetry, fiction and nonfiction workshops is limited to 16 students to allow for adequate attention to each student's work. Senior-level workshops are offered in a variety of genres, including screenwriting, travel writing, humor writing and historical fiction. As a capstone to the program, students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a creative writing professor on a project of their choosing. Many Creative Writing majors gain valuable practical experience with layout software and the contemporary publishing environment by editing and staffing Nebo, Tech’s nationally distributed literary journal.
The requirements for the B.F.A. in Creative Writing leave students with over 30 hours of true electives. Some student use these hours to take additional creative writing course, but others add a second major or minors in English, film studies, journalism, TESOL, Spanish, German, or Japanese.
HANDS-ON LEARNING opportunities
- Creative Writing Education majors can gain valuable editing and publishing experience by enrolling in either ENGL 2881 Practicum: Literary Journal Publication or ENGL 4881-4 Practicum: Editing Literary Journal. The student editor and staff produce two issues of Tech's nationally distributed literary magazine Nebo each year.
Each year the Department of English and World Languages hosts two visiting authors who conduct a workshop with creative writing majors and give public reading.

Our unique online creative writing degree allows you to take writing courses from the start. The program features 4 writing workshops, including an advanced workshop in which you'll complete a polished piece in the genre of your choice.
The courses in our BA in Creative Writing can help develop your talent for creating stories, novels and characters and turning them into finished, professional pieces. Whether you choose the general track or a specific genre, you'll learn from published writers with valuable industry insights.
In addition to the courses and electives within the major, SNHU's online writing degree program includes 30 credits of free electives. This leaves you with room to choose courses or a minor in an area of study that you'd like to write about – like history or psychology – or the opportunity to complement your studies with career skills, such as graphic design or marketing. Creative Writing and Publishing Major Minor
If you have a way with words and a passion for language, then consider studying Creative Writing and Publishing. Learn to master the art of storytelling and work towards your dream career as an author, editor, freelancer, or communications strategist.
Your studies will equip you with the skills to succeed in a broad range of publishing contexts. Experiment with different genres of writing, including novels, short stories, poetry and screenwriting, with all creative outcomes being workshopped by supportive peers and enthusiastic staff.
There will be multiple opportunities for publication during your studies. You will be mentored by a team of published authors, editors and researchers who bring real-world industry experience to the classroom.

Writing is more central to our culture than ever before. The communication revolution demands written content—on the page, on the screen, and in new and evolving forms and spaces. Writers, storytellers and experts with nuanced and creative language are needed to provoke, entertain and connect to audiences in expanding ways. QUT offers the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate writing course in South-East Queensland with the broadest range of units on offer. Within the BFA structure, you gain the deepest possible access to this knowledge.

The course is taught by highly experienced published authors and scholars. Visits and guest lectures from writers, editors and publishers will help you gain a unique perspective on writing as a vocation, and provide access to the industry and national writing communities. A thriving on-campus literary culture and associations with festivals and local publishing houses will keep you engaged with fellow travellers and industry tastemakers as you develop your craft. You will benefit from a transdisciplinary approach from the outset, encouraging you as a specialist creative writer to work in teams with others who have different creative skill sets. We aim to produce writers who not only have sophisticated writing skills, but who are critically engaged thinkers with knowledge about the debates and cultural contexts informing our practices today.

What to expect.
Your studies will begin with you working intensively on your writing in a number of forms and genres including novels, short stories, creative non-fiction, science fiction and fantasy writing, media, poetry, digital media, editing and scriptwriting. There will be a focus on new and emergent forms, while learning to think and write critically about texts. From there, you will build specialist writing skills for professional applications via deep engagement with industry partners and contexts. Later in your degree you will choose electives to tailor your course to your strengths and vocational interests. You will write a sustained piece of creative work in a genre of your choice and participate in editing and developing a manuscript for a targeted market.
Double degrees
Combine creative writing with a second study area for greater career flexibility and opportunities in other industries. Consider a double degree with:
- business to develop your career as a creative writer, publishing professional or public relations consultant
- law to use your skills for a career as an in-house lawyer, solicitor in private practice, policy adviser, intellectual property lawyer or crime writer.
If you are looking to apply your creative abilities to education settings or the teaching profession you have some options. You can complete your creative writing course first and then follow with a Master of Teaching in early childhood, primary or secondary education.* You can undertake a double degree in secondary education at the same time as your creative writing degree.

Careers and outcomes
With a creative writing major you will graduate with advanced writing and communication capabilities as well as analytic and editorial experience. These are rare, real-world skills that are keenly sought by employers. Graduates also find success working as creative writers and editors in community and freelance capacities.
Opportunities exist as fiction writers, scriptwriters, reviewers, travel writers, feature writers, editors, publishers, media workers and teachers. The publishing and screen industries, advertising and public relations agencies, magazines, newspapers, digital content providers, government and large corporations all require specialist writers with a flair for language.

Course structure, your course.
To meet the course requirements of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Creative Writing), you must complete the following:
- Two common units (KYB101 and KYB102) – 24 credit points
- Creative Writing major – 168 credit points
- Complementary studies – 48 credit points from the Situated Creative Practice Extension plus 48 credit points chosen from a minor or unit options (electives).
- Introduction to creative writing practice.
- Develop critical and analytical skills in reading and writing a variety of literature forms.
- Learn from lecturers and tutors with industry experience.
- Write and analyse short stories, creative nonfiction and youth writing.
- Build on practical skills and conceptual backgrounds.
- Study script-writing, stylistics, poetics and corporate writing.
- Explore how a variety of notable novels were written.
- Choose electives to tailor your course to your strengths and vocational interests.
- Write a sustained piece of creative work in a genre of your choice.
- Participate in editing and developing a manuscript for a targeted market.

Study overseas
Study overseas while earning credit towards your QUT creative industries degree with one of our worldwide exchange partners.
Overseas study can be for one or two semesters (or during the semester break) and the units you take can be in a creative or non-creative discipline area, depending on how they match with your QUT course. Saving your electives for exchange will allow you the most flexibility.

Creative Writing Bachelor's Degree Overview
The degree provides you with a comprehensive and intensive curriculum of classes and workshops in craft and technique, exposure to the work of established writers, and opportunities for you to work closely with peers and published writers as they develop and hone their creative work and critical skills.
You get the opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty who bring their real-life experience and expertise as published authors into the classroom. Faculty are deeply engaged with creative writing students and act as mentors and advisors. Students in the program enjoy small class sizes, access to internship opportunities in a vibrant literary city, and a supportive community of peers. Students complete a final portfolio project that they can use alongside a resume. There are active creative writing student groups and writing events, including an annual reading series that brings writers of national and international reputation to campus. The B.F.A. requirements are designed to provide introductory-level experience writing in the three customary genres: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. This is followed by intensive work in one of those genres.
The creative writing major is highly flexible with an elective structure that allows you to pursue your interests in literature, literary theory, film, screenwriting, and publishing. The department also offers an undergraduate degree or minor in English , a minor in film studies , and a certificate in comics studies .
Creative Writing Bachelor's Degree: Why PSU?
- Pathos Literary Magazine : A creative publication, staffed entirely by students, that exclusively publishes student work in three issues per year.
- Portland Review : A literary journal produced by graduate students in the English department that promotes the works of emerging writers and artists alongside the works of well-established authors. Portland Review has been publishing exceptional prose, poetry, and art since 1956 and has been noted in the Best American series and honored by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oregon Arts Commission.
- Vanguard : A weekly print and digital newspaper distributed for free throughout the Portland State campus area. Entirely student-run, employing about 60 paid student reporters, multimedia contributors, photographers, graphic designers, and editors, its publishing body is the Portland State Media Board, consisting of four students, four faculty members, and one community member. The newspaper and its staff have earned several collegiate journalism awards, including the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association General Excellence Award and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Award.
- Ooligan Press : An award-winning nonprofit general trade press that publishes books honoring the cultural and natural diversity of the Pacific Northwest. Ooligan Press is a teaching press staffed by students pursuing master’s degrees in the Department of English.
- The Writing Center : A service to help students improve their writing and understand strategies to gain critical thinking skills they can adapt to all their writing projects. Writing center staff support students by acting as consultants rather than copyeditors, guiding students through their work by asking questions rather than editing specific text, with the goal of ensuring that the student-writer maintains agency over their writing.
Portland State offers many opportunities for students to engage in the broader creative community in the city through internships and jobs. Our students are able to work and carry out internships while they’re in school, allowing them to build relationships and add experience to their resumes.

Students in Chatham’s creative writing program are given a supportive setting of faculty and students alike. The faculty take undergraduate work seriously, motivating students to develop their crafts and experiment with their voices. Students who major in creative writing graduate with an understanding of multiple literary genres, of how to revise and refine their creative and academic writing, and of how to get their work in print. —JESS TURNER ’17

Highly qualified students may also be admitted to the five-year BFA/MA in Creative Writing with an option to complete the MFA in Creative Writing or to the BFA/ Master of Arts in Teaching program through Chatham’s Integrated Degree Program. Both programs provide an immersive undergraduate creative writing experience enabling students to further their education and start their careers even faster.

Sample Courses & Curriculum
Creative Writing I
Students present a selection of their work each week for class comment and criticism. In addition, special problem topics are assigned weekly to develop writing skills. Readings concentrate on contemporary prose and verse.
Literary Publishing
This course is an introduction to literary publishing through practice, reading, and discussion. All phases of the publishing process are addressed, especially copyediting, design, and marketing. The course is designed to allow students to gain experience and knowledge of the creative, technical, and professional aspects of publishing a literary journal.
Multi-Genre Writing
This is an upper-level course for BFA students focusing on creative writing for experienced writers, geared toward preparing a finished manuscript or portfolio of work for potential publication in the student’s primary genre. Students read and write in the craft of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.

Our Faculty

Chatham’s undergraduate literary magazine, Minor Bird , is student-managed, including copy editing, design, and marketing. All Chatham students are welcome to submit poetry, fiction, and nonfiction to the magazine.
Creative Writing Club
Chatham’s Creative Writing Club sponsors readings and events, such as open-mic nights at Rea Coffeehouse. The club welcomes first-year students.
Expanding Horizons
Creative Writing majors are encouraged to study abroad and to explore interests leading to a second major or a minor.
Summer Community of Writers
Qualified students may participate in Chatham's Summer Community of Writers (SCW), a 10-day experience that features daily workshops, dynamic craft lectures, faculty and student readings, and field trips to local points of interest.
Integrated Degree Program
Qualified students can be admitted early to Chatham's Master of Arts in Creative Writing and other graduate programs in writing.

“I think sometimes older people make the mistake of thinking that young people don’t have anything worthwhile to say, and that is so untrue,” he says. “I also learned a lot about my own sexism, the way in which I was viewing women in my life and women’s role in society. That’s a lot of what I learned at Chatham. Hopefully I’m still learning how to look at it.”

This course is embedded in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences .
00:00:02 My favourite part of the Creative Writing degree has just been how hands on it's been, they really balance the theoretical literature studies really well with the actual writing.
The subjects introduce to students all the foundational elements of creative writing, f or example, story, structure, character, theme.
00:00:19 The tutors are really promoting you to experiment with your own style, so it ranges from things like experimental to poetry to script writing and you really have a choice of whatever you want to produce.
00:00:32 The program has a strong emphasis on writing craft process and industry and students graduate with a portfolio of works. One of the benefits of the program is that students can also complete two communications majors, so for example they might do journalism or digital and social media and that gives them really strong opportunities to learn new skills that they can take into the workplace.
Creative writing and digital and social media have a lot of crossover so digital media is all about telling a story and taking users on a journey and creative writing is all becoming digitalized in terms of publishing and accessing content, so they really give you an edge up in both industries.
00:01:05 So the teaching team have really strong industry connections, and they often bring those industry connections into the classrooms for the benefit of students.
That can sometimes mean working on real-life projects, or strong opportunities to have their works published.
They put a really good emphasis on workshopping, so you’re actually getting a lot of editorial skills at the same time and critiquing other people’s work actually gives you a really g ood idea of how to be critical with your own work, which I think is a really hard skill to develop.
The UTS Anthology, which is a professionally published book of student creative writing, has been running now for over 30 years its really well established, high profile, well known and has won and been shortlisted for many awards.
I’ve been the main editor of five pieces on the anthology, and I’ve sub edited another four pieces. I’ve already started my own editing business, and with the anthology, I’ve already worked with a publisher, with Brio books, and I’ve learnt things like typesetting, and just a lot of other really fun and exciting things, and I’m so proud that I was a part of the team this year.
Of course a lot of students want to go on and pursue a career as a writer and many of them d o that, but a lot of students also go on and work in the broader communications and creative industries in a variety of roles.

Meet creative writing professor Dr. Carole Waterhouse. She is the author of three novels -The Tapestry Baby, Without Wings and Winsome's Delight - and the short story collection The Paradise Ranch. Dr. Waterhouse has an MFA in fiction, a Ph.D. in 20th-century literature, and has reviewed books for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the New York Times.

Practicum placement
PWP323 Professional Writing Placement is available to some students. It is an optional core subject (ie. you can complete this or PWP324). This subject is not suitable for students in full-time paid work or who are unavailable during office hours for other reasons. In order to enrol in this subject, students need to meet these eligibility requirements:
- Complete the PWP311 prerequisite subject
- Be enrolled in the BA Humanities (PWP)
- Be resident in Australia
- Find a suitable work placement, which is approved by email by the subject coordinator.
We recommend that only students with a degree weighted average of 65% or more do the Placement subject.
Students are required to find their own (unpaid) work placement and cannot do the placement at a workplace in which they have done volunteer or paid work already. Placements run for 14 days or 105 hours over the SP3 period. The placement must involve the student in completing research, writing or editing tasks in a workplace where there is supervision and direction from a nominated staff member with expertise in writing, editing or a related field. The workplace can be public sector, community sector or private sector but sole trader businesses are not recommended. Once a work placement is found, the student, workplace supervisor and subject coordinator will all sign a contract specifying the work to be undertaken. Students will also participate in online discussions and write a final report on the placement (assessed items).
Further information and support for this subject is provided during the PWP311 subject in SP1. CRL is not available for this subject.
Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) is assessed on individual merit and is awarded for different types of learning, for example, studies you have previously completed or for relevant work experience.
Students must be admitted in an award degree of study before lodging their completed CRL application, along with all required supporting documentation for a formal assessment.

As a student studying the Creative Writing and Literature major you will explore historical and contemporary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, autobiographies, essays, films and plays.
You will focus on:
demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the contexts and cultural influences of a wide range of literature and the theory and practice of creative writing.
being equipped to work independently and collaboratively to construct effective arguments and produce creative and critical texts across a wide range of genres and written media.

You will also graduate with advanced writing, presentation, digital, communication, research and problem-solving skills that can be transferable across a range of roles and are highly regarded by prospective employers.

What you'll learn
The Creative Writing and Literature major allows you to delve into a variety of creative forms and texts. You will study historical and contemporary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, autobiographies, essays, films and plays. As you begin to create your own great classics, you will also learn how different written and multimedia texts have impacted cultures around the world. Under the guidance of highly experienced academics:

1. Students are required to complete their second major from: Aboriginal Studies, Applied Linguistics, Cultural Studies, History and Global Politics, Languages (French/Italian/Japanese), Psychology, Sociology, or Law, Policy and Politics. Students who wish to complete a major or minor learning area from the list of available university major and minor options should contact the Program Director for approval and enrolment advice.
2. Students intending to undertake a Master of Teaching (Secondary) should consult with their program director for a schedule of recommended courses.
1. This course is one of two core courses that provide a foundation for the program.
2. Students complete either Electives or Professional Directions Program courses 1 and 2. Students may be directed to complete English Language courses in place of their electives.
3. A minor consists of four courses (18 units), two of which must be at Level 1 (Introductory) and two at Level 2 (Intermediate).
4. The Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience course can be chosen in place of the minor sequence and is equivalent to 18 units. Students who choose this option will swap their first year (Level 1 Introductory) minor sequence to Elective 1 and Elective 2. Students can then choose to study the Hawke course in their second year (Level 2 Intermediate). Students will be required to complete the two available Level 2 Intermediate course options at second year in the opposite study period to undertaking the Hawke course.
5. Students are advised to select their minor from within the majors offered by the MBAA Bachelor of Arts.
Study hours
For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects, as well as to contribute to online discussion forums (independent study). So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12–26 hours of study when at university and 14–28 hours of independent study per week.

Why Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing and Literature)
This degree increases your employment prospects by enabling you to gain expertise in two different areas of interest.
You'll have the opportunity to study a portion of your degree overseas, as part of the University’s Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience Program (full semester) or Hawke Professional Experience Program (part semester). In this program you will volunteer with an international non-government organisation (NGO), usually in an overseas destination.

Your program director
I am Director of the Bachelor of Arts Programs, Lecturer in Applied Linguistics, and Fellow of the Advanced Higher Education Academy, UK. My academic background is in Languages and Applied Linguistics (BA Hons, PhD), following extensive experience in clinical practice across a range of health and medical domains in Australia. My work places a strong focus on developing reciprocal, trusting relationships in my teaching, mentoring and engagement with students, and in my research in partnership with colleagues, community and industry. My teaching and research inform each other. I coordinate and teach core courses in the Bachelor of Arts, and my research focuses on language and communication in professions and organisations in various contexts. These include state and nationally funded projects in health care, aged care, education, counselling, and policing. The upshot is that our Bachelor of Arts program develops each student’s interests, strengths and aspirations, enabling each student to explore and prepare for a wide range of career and life goals. The unique double major structure combines theory and practice with real-world experience to develop strong interdisciplinary skills that are highly valued by industry, government and community.

Flexible study

On this course you will be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators, technicians and research students. You will also benefit from regular guest lectures from industry.

- Writing Fiction: The creative writer must learn to critically examine their own work and the work of others. Here, in a workshop environment, you will develop your skills as a writer of prose fiction by developing your own writing and responding to critical feedback from your peers.
- Narrating Identities: Self, Text & the World: This unit aims to provide you with a sophisticated knowledge and understanding of cultural and critical influences on a range of texts and literary media, exploring how literary, philosophical, and aesthetic movements have been used to define, construct and represent the self across the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Interactive Storytelling: Using a narratological and creative approach, you will study the development and nature of the art of storytelling in the context of digital-interactive media.
- Publishing Cultures and Materialities: From the eras of Cuneiform to Kindle, you'll study public writing as material objects, which have an economy, history and culture. Publishing as we’ve known it stems from a specific iteration of those conditions and is now shifting into the online new. To take advantage of the opportunities and challenges this development affords, you'll therefore look at fiction from this material sociological perspective.
- Marketing & PR for Writers : This unit will equip you with the knowledge and marketing skills needed by writers and publishers, regardless of the format. You will develop your own ‘brands’ online and will have the opportunity to work on real-life projects for Fresher Publishing, devising marketing and PR strategies to raise awareness/sales of the Fresher Writing Prize and the Fresher Writing anthology.
- Design, Editing & Publishing: The aim of this unit is to enable you to evaluate and practice the significant processes of professional publishing. It seeks to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed by writers, editors and other professionals in the publishing industry by engaging in real publishing projects for Fresher Publishing , the university’s own publishing press.
- Dissertation/Major Project: You may choose between a purely theoretical, academic dissertation or a major creative writing project supported by either a reflective or ‘route to publication’ rationale. By bringing together the skills, craft, theories, knowledge and critical insight you have developed during the programme, you will hone your individual strengths and establish lines of enquiry that may take you onto further doctoral study or into future careers.
The majority of assignments are all individual coursework, although the publishing semester will include group work. You will work on real-life publishing projects for the university’s publishing press, Fresher Publishing and will have the opportunity to be involved in the administration of The Fresher Writing Prize and New Media Writing Prize .
MA Creative Writing and Publishing students are immersed in a vibrant media culture and have access to an extraordinary range of multimedia facilities, including radio studios. This offers the potential for students to produce audio clips for their author websites (produced in the Marketing and PR unit) and even full length audio books.
You will be working on industry relevant software, including Indesign and Photoshop, and will also have the opportunity to use the university’s own software – Genarrator – for producing interactive narratives.

- Travel costs for optional field trips, outdoor wear and footwear for mandatory and optional field trips (if applicable).
- Travel costs to and from the University campus. An annual bus pass can be purchased alongside your rent if you are living in halls of residence/Unilet accommodation or may be purchased separately.
- Travel costs to and from your placement (both in the UK and overseas) if this is part of your course of study. Placement year funding information can be found on our website.
- Clothing or equipment costs required for your placement if this is part of your course of study.

While all aspects of the programme, including required field trips, are included in the fee, additional, optional or extra curricula activities may be available for which a student contribution is required.
Repeat units
If you need to repeat one or more units during the course of your studies (with or without attendance) the pricing will be pro-rata of the full time fee.
International (not Rep. of Ireland) students need to pay a non-refundable £3,000 deposit to secure their place on a postgraduate course. You will need to pay your deposit by the date stated in your offer letter. The remainder of your fee will be payable on registration/enrolment/ There are two exceptions to the non-refundable rule on the deposit.

Dr Brad Gyori - Programme Leader
Brad Gyori is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Storytelling at Bournemouth University. He is the Programme Leader for the MA in Creative Writing and Publishing and an HEA Senior Fellow. He holds a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Arizona State University and has taught both media theory and production at ASU and the Tribeca Academy in downtown Chicago. He is a practice-led researcher, playwright, web designer, screenwriter, director, journalist, songwriter and novelist. As a television writer-producer, he has worked for such networks as MTV, VH1, FX, E! and HBO online. For ten years, he was the Head Writer of the Emmy award winning Talk Soup. He has been nominated for five Emmys. His articles have appeared in The Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, Interactive Storytelling, Journalism Education, The Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-based Learning and Flow.
