To start, make sure you have a few essentials on hand: scissors , chenille stems, and ribbon . If you're making large bows, plan to use two spools of ribbon per bow (more on that later). Begin to pull individual bow loops out from the center, alternating pulls from each end.
To fluff the bow, pull one loop out from the center of the bow. Wire ribbon will allow you to mold the loop to create a rounded shape. Next, pull a loop out from the other side of the bow and, once again, mold the loop to create a rounded shape. Repeat this process, alternating sides with each pull, until all the loops have been pulled out and fluffed. At this point, you should have a nice shapeâall that's missing are the tails.
Once all the loops are formed, tie a long piece of ribbon around the center to make the tails of the bow.
This is where your second spool of ribbon comes in. Tie a long trail of ribbon around the center of the bow, being sure to cover the chenille stems from view. If you'll be fixing the bow to a tree, wreath, etc., you can opt to leave out the ends of the chenille stems to help attach the bow. Let the tails trail down to the desired length. To finish, snip each ribbon end at a diagonal. Whatever you do, don't leave those blunt endsâyou've come too far.
If you're making a bow out of ribbon that is particularly thick, be sure to adjust the size of your loops accordingly. If you make them too tight, you'll have a hard time getting your bow to look like anything other than a round puff. Don't be afraid to start over if you realize you need to make your bow larger or smaller. Knowing how to tie a bow is an essential skill for anyone who enjoys wrapping presents, decorating for parties, and celebrating the holidays. Here are three easy ways on how to make a bow with wired ribbon. With the holiday season fast approaching, perhaps you can learn how to tie a bow during your spare time. Itâs fun to do, especially with your friends during the weekends! So in this post, weâll teach you not one, not two, but three ways on how you can tie a bow.

Supplies You Need to Make a Bow:
- Ribbon (Any kind will do)(This tutorial uses a satin ribbon)
- Wire ribbon will hold its shape and allows you to create bows with lots of volumes
- Satin ribbon is a smooth fabric ribbon, use this for a classic result
- Acetate ribbon has a plastic feel, often used in packaging
- Curling ribbon, a crimped ribbon that will curl when pulled over a sharp edge
- Scissors to cut the ribbon
3 Ways to Make a Big Beautiful Bow
Bow #1 | how to make a big round bow.
To make a large circular bow, you will need three things: a wide ribbon, a thinner ribbon, and your scissors. Cut out about 1.5 yards of the wide ribbon and about a foot of the thin ribbon.
Step 1: Fold the Ribbon
Begin with your wide ribbon. Place it on the table and start folding over 5âł pieces on top of each other, accordion-style.
Step 2: Keep Folding
Fold over the entire length of the wide ribbon. It should stack neatly on top of itself.
Step 3: Clip Sides of the Ribbon
Once you have your entire ribbon folded accordion-style over itself, clip the sides of your ribbon. Clip out a V, making sure to catch all the layers of ribbon when you clip.
Step 4: Add Thin Ribbon
Take your thin piece of ribbon and place it under the V-notched sides.
Step 5: Tie Thin Ribbon Around the Bow
Tie your thin ribbon in a basic overhand knot around the wide ribbon, pull it tight.
Step 6: Shape Your Ribbon Into the Bow
Take some time to pull all the pieces of wire ribbon apart, puff them out to give them volume. I used a wire ribbon to add more body, but any kind of ribbon will still work.

Bow #2 | How to Make a Layered Bow
You can use any type of ribbon for this bow. You will need approximately one yard of ribbon and your scissors. Cut your yard in half.
Step 1: Remove the Wire
This step is optional, as I chose to work with a wired ribbon because I liked the color. I donât want the wire in my final product, so I am going to pull it out. Do this by taking the wire in one hand, the ribbon in the other, and gently pull. Move the ribbon down as you pull the wire out.
Step 2: Fold the Ribbon Over Itself
Fold the ribbon over itself, accordion-style. For this particular bow, I am working with 5âł folds. You can choose your own size, but I found this length works well for the width of the ribbon I chose.
Step 3:Â Add Another Ribbon
Once you have folded your ribbon over itself, take the other half of your ribbon and put it underneath it.
Step 4: Tie a Knot Around the Ribbon to Form a Bow
Bring the other ribbon around the folded ribbon and tie a basic overhand knot. Pull it tight.
Step 5: Adjust the Ribbon to Make a Bow
Bring out the folded pieces of the ribbon. Open them up, space them out, and work with them until you are happy with your final shape.
Step 6: Clip the Tail of Your Bow
Clip the tail of your bow so it has a nice and sharp angled edge. This creates a polished look and prevents the ribbon from fraying.
Now you have a basic layered bow with a tail. This technique is often used in holiday decor .
Bow #3 | How to Make a Flower Bow Out of a Wire Ribbon
This is a very easy way to get a beautiful flower-shaped bow. You will need a wire ribbon for this bow technique. You will need about 1 yard of ribbon and your scissors.
Step 1: Pull Out 1 Side of Wire
To create your flower shape, you will only want one of your sides of the ribbon to have a wire in it. Pull the wire out of one, and only one, of the sides. Do this by taking the wire in one hand, the ribbon in the other, and gently pulling. Move the ribbon down as you pull the wire out.
Step 2: Throw Away Wire
Set the wire aside, you can recycle it later.
Step 3: Tie Other Wire in a Knot
Take the wire that is still inside of your ribbon and tie it in a knot at the base. To tie a knot with this thin wire, all you have to do is wrap it around itself several times.
Step 4: Hold the Wire Taut and Pull the Ribbon Down
Now to create your flower-shaped bow, you will need to bunch up your ribbon. Do this by holding the wire taut in one hand, and bring the ribbon down with your other. The knot you tied at the end of our wire should hold the ribbon in place so it will remain bunched and not fall out the other end.
Step 5: Spiral the Ribbon
After all the ribbon have been bunched at the bottom of your wire, work the ribbon in your hands so the wired side faces in, and work the ribbon around itself in a spiral shape.
Step 6: Poke the Wire Through Middle
Take the long piece of wire from one end of your ribbon and poke it through the center of the spiral. (In this picture sequence I taped my wire so you could actually see it â you donât need to do that at home.)
Step 7: Tie the Wire Around the Ribbon to Finish the Bow
Your wire is now through the middle of the flower and on the same end as the knotted wire. Now poke the long end through the ribbon, catching a wired edge beneath it, and pull it tight. Do this twice and cut your wire. The flower will now be secured in place.
This flower ribbon was probably the easiest of all to make, and you can use this technique to make bows for packages, floral arrangements, and Lord knows what else! Make your own boutonniere and corsages, floral wreaths, and more. You could make a whole bouquet of ribbon flowers in no time.

The bow, as a fashion accessory, has been around for centuries. In fact, it dates back to Ancient Rome and Greece. But in spite of its long history, the bow is still relevant today. Whether you are looking for an interesting way to accessorize or you want to create a simple yet eye-catching centerpiece for your outfit, this tutorial will show you how to make a bow with a thin ribbon.
How To Make A Bow With Thin Ribbon?
If you are looking to make a bow with a thin ribbon, this tutorial will show you how. The materials that we will need are:
– Thin ribbon – Scissors – Glue gun – Ruler How to make a bow with a thin ribbon
Step 1: Cut the ribbon in half.Â
Step 2: Fold one end of the ribbon in half lengthwise.Â

After you have done this for all four sides, fold the ends back over themselves and trim them off. The finished product should look like this:

Like bow #1 above, this type of bow also has two layers of ribbon attached to each other at equal intervals by glue but instead has a dotted line on the center of the ribbon strip. This bow looks similar to the one above, except that it has a dotted line on the center.

This is identical to bow #2 but with a ribbon loop instead of a dotted line. It looks like this:

Tips For Making A Bow With Thin Ribbon
Step one: start with a thin ribbon..
The bow is constructed from two components: the ribbon and the knot. The ribbon is some of the most important parts because it provides a focal point for the outfit and helps make the bow look more glamorous. You’ll need to be careful when choosing your ribbon. A heavier, thicker ribbon will not work in this project; you’ll need something that is flexible yet sturdy enough to support your knot.
Step two: Measure out how long you want your bow to be.
Once you have found a length of ribbon that’s suitable, fold it in half length-wise so that it creates a loop on one side. Next, measure out how long you want your bow to be by measuring from the center of the loop to the end of the fold on each side of the ribbon then adding about an inch or two onto each measurement for the knot (the knot will eventually sit below where you measured). The amount should be about three inches per side for this project.
Step three: Create an “X” shape with both pieces of fabric and sew them together at one end with sewing thread.
Now take both ends of the ribbons and cross them over each other so that they meet at one endpoint (a little above where they were joined before) then tie them together with a tight knot similar to how you would tie shoelaces together – just make sure it’s tight enough not to slip off easily!
Step four: Hold the two ribbons together and make sure to straighten them out so that they’re even.
At this point, you should have a ribbon hanging from the center of one piece of fabric , and you should have an “X” shape formed by both pieces of fabric. Next, take both ends of the ribbon and cross them over each other so that they meet at one endpoint (a little above where they were joined before) then tie them together with a tight knot.
Step five: Press down on the knot so it’s in place.
Once you’ve tied your bow with a ribbon loop, you’ll need to press down on it to make it sit flat against your fabric and keep it from sagging too much. Now go ahead and put everything back together as shown in the picture.
With your bow complete, you’re ready to attach some ribbons!

How to Make a Bow with Wired Ribbon (The Easy Way)
Making a big bow to decorate a railing, wreath or Christmas tree is easier than you think! Here are the easy instructions for how to make a bow with wired ribbon .
Buying pre-made bows can be very expensive in the stores. Save a lot of money by learning how to make bows with wired ribbon.
Forget those complicated tutorials with lots of measurements and folding. If you can tie a bow on your shoe, then you can make these gorgeous bows! So let’s get started.
Once you learn this skill, you will be able to make large and small bows for all holidays and all occasions!
Not every roll of ribbon is the same. They will come in a variety of lengths and widths. Some ribbon will have a wire edge and many will not.

I used a 4-yard (12 feet) roll of wired ribbon to make my bow. It is the perfect size for making big, loopy bows.
Smaller ribbon rolls, such as 3-yard rolls of ribbons, will have less ribbon to use, so your bows will be slightly smaller.

How to Make a Bow with Wired Ribbon
Remove the wire ribbon from the roll. Cut into three sections.
I use normal everyday scissors to cut the wire ribbon. The wire is so thin that it is easily cut. No need to buy specialty scissors.
For a 12-foot roll of ribbon, these are the measurements that I used:
Take the 48-inch piece of ribbon and tie in a bow. You don’t need to use any fancy method, just tie a bow like you normally would.
Chances are your bow won’t be perfect the first time. One tail might be longer than the other. In that case, just untie the bow and keep trying again until the tails are about even and the loop is as big as you would like.
Fluff out the bow’s loops by putting your hand in the loop and pushing it out with your fingers.
One of the loops will probably be showing the wrong side (not the finished side) of the ribbon. Just twist the wire ribbon to show the finished side facing outward.
Next, take the 62-inch ribbon section and repeat the same steps above. Make this bow a bit larger than the smaller bow. The loops should be about an inch or two bigger, and the tails will be a little bit longer, too.
Now, lay the small bow on top of the big bow.
Using the 30-inch piece of wire ribbon, drape the ribbon over the center of the two bows. Make sure the right-side of the ribbon is facing outward.
Then, tie a knot in the ribbon piece underneath the middle of both bows. This piece of ribbon will now hold both of the bows together.
Arrange the ribbon so that the tails hang down with the tails of the bows, and so you cannot see the knot.
Optional step: If you want to hang the bow, you can put a long piece of yarn, pipe cleaner or fishing line in the back of the two bows before securing them together. Afterwards, tie a knot in the yarn or fishing line to create a hanger.
I personally just cut a piece of fishing line after making the bow and gently push it through the back of the bow underneath the knot.
A large yarn needle can help you thread ribbon, yarn or fishing line through the knot more easily.
Fluff out the wire ribbon loops to be as big as possible. Arrange the loops to your liking.
If desired, trim the bow tails. You can also cut the end of the tails in a diagonal cut, if you would like.

FAQs About Making Bows Out of Wired Ribbon
Do i need wired ribbon.
You don’t have to use wired ribbon, but it sure does make it easier! The loops of the bow will not stay puffed out without the thin wire in the edges of the wired ribbon.
What is Wired Ribbon?
Wired ribbon is any type of ribbon that has thin, bendable wires in the outer edges. This ribbon is easy to mold into shapes and loops and keep the appearance, unlike fabric ribbons.
What Width of Ribbon Should I Use?
These instructions will work with any width of ribbon. However, you will probably use 3/4 inch to 2 inch ribbon for making the bows.
Thin ribbons do not have enough space to be wired, so they will be harder to work with. Wider widths of ribbon, such as 3 inch ribbon or larger, will be hard to tie in a bow.
How Many Loops Are In This Bow?
These instructions for making a wire ribbon bow will have a bow with four loops. However, you can add as many loops as you would like.
To add more loops, add more bows and tie them all together. For instance, if you have three bows, then you will have six loops. Using four bows will give you eight loops.
For each bow that you add, you will add another two loops to your ribbon.
How Big Are These Bows?
You can make these wired ribbon bows as big or as small as you would like. It depends on how much ribbon you have as to how big you can make the bow.
If you would like to make a really huge bow for outdoors, you can do that. Just be sure to buy a roll of ribbon that has many yards on the roll.
For smaller bows, such as gift wrapping bows, use the same instructions with smaller cuts of ribbon.
How Can I Customize The Bows?
While you can choose one roll of ribbon and make one bow, there are many ways to customize the look.
Consider combining different types of ribbons to make the bow. Tie one bow in one ribbon, the other bow in a different type of ribbon, and secure together for a two-tone effect.
Combining textures is also a popular way to vary the look of the bows. Use burlap and cotton ribbon together. Or mix velvet and satin ribbons.

How To Make A Bow Out Of Satin Ribbon
Bows and satin ribbon go together like peanut butter and honey – you can hardly think of one without thinking of the other. Of course, you can make a bow out of anything, but a satin ribbon bow is so lovely. Why would you want to use anything else?
So how do you make a bow out of satin ribbon? The first step is to choose the size and color that you want, depending on how big you want the bow. This will help you determine how much satin ribbon you need to cut from the spool. Fifteen to twenty inches (28 to 51 cm) of ribbon will make a good-sized bow. The tails should be about two to three inches for a bow this size, so the total length of ribbon you need is about twenty-one to twenty-eight inches. Cut the ribbon a bit longer than what you need, just in case. You can always trim the excess later.
Now that you know how to choose your satin for your bow, it’s time for the step-by-step instructions. I’m going to show you 4 different types of bows that you can create with a satin ribbon. Let’s get started!
How to Make 4 Types of Bows with Satin Ribbon
Satin ribbon is available in a slew of bright colors , slim sizes (only 3/8 of an inch wide), super-sized (1 ½ inch wide) and a variety of other sizes. Satin tends to be a bit slippery , so if you are new to tying bows, you might not find it that easy, at first. But, rest assured, you will get the hang of it in no time.
1. Simple Bow
How to make a simple bow out of satin ribbon:
- Measure and cut the length of the ribbon you need. Make it long enough for the bow and the tail.
- Lay the ribbon out on a flat surface with the dull side down and the shiny side up , unless you are using double-sided ribbon . This type doesn’t have a âwrongâ side. Both sides are shiny.Â
- Fold one end in and then the other end so that you have an X in the middle . You now have two loops and two tails.Â
- Adjust the loops and tails to make them both exactly the same in size and length â perfectly symmetrical.Â
- Fold the left loop over the right loop and take it around to the back.
- Pass it through the center hole to make the knot and gently pull it tight.Â
- Pull and fluff the loops until your bow is perfect and your knot is tight.
Voila! You have just made your first satin bow!

2. Wire-Bound Bow
How to make a wire-bound bow with satin ribbon:
- Measure and cut the wired ribbon to the desired length.Â
- Lay it down on a flat surface with the dull side facing down.Â
- Fold in the ends to make two loops and two tails with an X in the center. Make sure the two bow and tails are symmetrical.Â
- Keep this form secure with one finger.Â
- With your other hand, s crunch the center of the bow and wrap a small piece of fine wire around the middle or neck of the bow. Make this nice and tight.
- Conceal the wire with a piece of ribbon. Glue or sew the back of the concealing piece of ribbon on the back of the bow.Â
- Cut the tails at an angle to prevent fraying.Â
That’s it! Another simple satin bow that looks great!

3. Gift Box Bow
You have seen those gift boxes wrapped in a ribbon with a bow on top, right? Most people just wrap the ribbon around the box and glue on a bow they bought at the store or online because it’s easier than making a fancy bow.
Well, from now on you can make these fancy little (or big) gift boxes yourself! This is what you do:
- Choose the size, width, and color of your ribbon, but don’t cut it, yet. ( I recommend 3/8 inch wide ribbon for this. ) Â Â Â
- Choose the box you want to use and wrap the ribbon lengthwise around the box. Hold the ribbon down with a dab of glue or a piece of clear or colored tape.Â
- Without cutting the ribbon, wrap it around the box width-wise and put a piece of tape in the center to hold it in place.Â
- Make two large loops in a figure-eight pattern. Hold down the first loop with your finger until the second loop is done and then put a piece of tape at the center of the figure-eight pattern to keep it in place.Â
- Make more loops the same way, shifting the angle so that the loops don’t end up on top of each other, but fan out. You should now have five figure-eights with each layer slightly smaller than the one below.Â
- Take the tails and glue them into the center of your bow, creating a puffy effect on top.Â
Once you get the hang of this technique, you won’t need to tape or glue the ribbon at each step. You will be able to make your bow by just holding the ribbon down with your finger.
However, you will have to glue or tape some parts to keep the bow from falling apart. Some people staple the center to keep the shape of the bow intact.
Another cool way to wrap a box is by wrapping the top and bottom separately. This way the recipient can open the box without removing the ribbon. This will preserve your beautiful bow! A gift your friend will cherish just as much as what is actually inside the box.
Follow the instructions above, but don’t wrap the box tight. Leave enough slack to tuck the ribbon into the box on the top and bottom â about two inches. Once you’re done, cut the ribbon on the box in such a way so that you can tape it inside the bottom of the box and under the lid. Â

4. Floral Satin Ribbon Bow
A floral bow is the perfect addition to a special gift, a bunch of flowers or a holiday wreath. This simple design looks like a million bucks, but you can make it yourself for just a few dollars and some easy to follow instructions. With a few twists, turns and ties your bow is ready to adorn a gift, bouquet or pony tail!
This is how it goes:
- Leave the ribbon on the spool. At this point you don’t know how much you will need for all the loops.Â
- Decide how long you want the tail to be and make a twist at this point. Keep the shiny side facing towards you. This point will be the center of your floral bow.Â
- Make a loop and twist the ribbon in the middle.
- Hold the twisted part between your fingers and make another loop on the opposite side.
- Just make one twist , but make it a tight one to keep the shape of the bow. Too many twists will make the center too big. You will be making many loops, so this area can get thick fast.
- Remember, you should be working with the end that is still attached to the spool , not the end you set aside for the tail. With this in mind, continue to make loops of equal size, alternating from one side to the other.
- Make as many loops as you need to get your desired fullness. Eight to ten loops should do the trick.Â
- Leave the narrow ribbon long enough on either side of the knot to use as a tie for attaching your bow onto a present, bouquet, or ponytail.Â
- Make sure the tails are at the back of the bow. You can now cut the ribbon from the spool.Â
- Once you have the tails the same length, cut the ends at an angle. This will prevent fraying.Â
- Arrange the loops into the shape and form you desire.
- Smooth out any creases to give your bow a nice polished look.

How to Make a Christmas Bow 4 Ways

There are so many fun ways to decorate for Christmas, but one great way to tie your decor (or gift wrapping) together is with Christmas bows! You can choose the ribbon and color scheme yourself to make your Christmas decorations extra special. If youâve ever wondered how to make a Christmas bow like you see in pictures, look no further!
Weâre going to show you how to make a Christmas bow out of ribbon four different ways, both big and small.
First, here are some things to take into consideration when purchasing your materials:
- Consider double sided ribbon – Though double sided ribbon isnât required for all of these bows, we recommend it if youâre worried about your ribbon getting twisted. Double sided ribbon ensures that the right side is always facing up!
- Use wired ribbon for shape – If you want your bow to have a lot of shape or fullness, use wired ribbon so that itâs easier to arrange.
- Sharp scissors are key – Sharp scissors leave clean cuts, and make it easy easy to cut through multiple layers and wired ribbon. We used fabric scissors.

How to Make a Classic Christmas Bow
The classic bow is what everyone pictures when they hear the word âbow.â It is the easiest of the four to make. You can use either regular ribbon or wired ribbon when making a classic Christmas bow. We used wired ribbon, which allowed us to mold the loops into full shapes rather than having them lay flat.
Step 1: Create three loops with your ribbon. Two that face upwards and one middle loop that faces downwards.
Step 2: Cross the right loop over the left loop so that the side with the tail hanging down faces out.
Step 3: Fold the right loop down through the center loop.
Step 4: Arrange your bow and enjoy!
How to Make a Double Bow
For the double bow, we suggest using thin, non-wired, double-sided ribbon for best results. As you can see in the video, we use single-sided ribbon, which still works. However, one of the loops will be twisted, as you have to twist the ribbon on the second loop in step 2 so that the right side is still facing you.
Since you use your fingers as a guide when making these bows, they will be relatively small. You can apply the same technique using something wider, like chair legs, if you want to make a large double bow.
Step 1: Cut a length of ribbon. Ours was 18 inches long. Then, make a peace sign with your index and middle fingers and rotate them sideways. Place the ribbon over your index and middle fingers, leaving about 4 inches overlapping, and hold ribbon in place between your thumb and index finger.
Step 2: Wrap the ribbon down and around the back of your fingers once. Repeat one more loop so the ribbon is now facing downwards behind your middle finger.
Step 3: Bring the ribbon in front of your middle finger. The ribbon should still be facing downwards.
Step 4: Loop the ribbon up and behind your middle finger so that it is facing away from you.
Step 5: Bring the ribbon forward so it lays horizontally across the vertical loops of ribbon.
Step 6: Thread through the opening between your index and middle finger.
Step 7: Circle the tail back around so that it crosses the horizontal strip of ribbon, making an âx.â
Step 8: Pull the tail up behind the âxâ and cinch the ribbon together, tightening the center.
How to Make a Gift Bow
A voluminous bow is a great way to make your gift pop. If you want to go beyond solid-colored, store-bought gift bows, try making your own with patterned ribbon! Weâll show you how to make a gift bow in six easy steps.
One-sided ribbon is fine for this type of bow. You can use non-wired or wired ribbon, though wired ribbon gives the bow a better shape. Since youâll be cutting through multiple layers of ribbon, youâll need sharp scissors, like fabric scissors, to create this bow. The gift bow uses a lot of ribbon (we used nearly 5.5 feet in our 4.5 inch wide bow), so if you plan on making multiple gift bows, be sure to stock up on ribbon.
Step 1: Measure how wide you want the bow, keeping the ribbon attached to the spool if youâre unsure how many layers you want.
Step 2: Fold that length inwards. Continue folding until you have the desired number of loops (one fold equals one loop). Once complete, cut the end of the ribbon. Youâll now have one big ring.
Step 3: Take the two ends of that ring and put them together so that they (and the loose end of the ribbon) are at the top center.
Step 4: Cut notches at the center of the ribbon. You should cut on the left and right sides about one-third of the way in on each side.
Step 5: Thread floral wire through the cuts and twist it tightly to secure.
Step 6: Pull and twist each loop to fill out your bow.
How to Make a Big Christmas Bow
This large bow is the perfect wreath bow. Use it to decorate your greenery, or place on your door or staircase to add festivity to your home! Single-sided, wired ribbon is best for this project. If youâre unsure how big you want each loop, leave the ribbon on the spool while youâre creating the bow.
Step 1: With the right side of the ribbon facing up, determine how long you want the tail of your ribbon to be.
Step 2: From that point, twist the ribbon so the side closest to the spool is facing wrong side up.
Step 3: Grab the end where the wrong side is facing up and loop it down towards the tail and back around to create a circle. Twist the ribbon so right sides are facing up on both sides. You should now have your center loop.
Step 4: Fold the ribbon back towards the bottom of the center loop to create your first side loop.
Step 5: Twist the ribbon so that the right side faces up and create another loop on the opposite side.
Step 6: Repeat until youâve filled out your bow with the desired number of loops
Step 7: Cut a piece of floral wire and thread through the center loop and around the rest of the bow. Twist to secure.
Step 8: Measure your second tail so itâs equal to the first and cut ribbon from the spool.

- Two 14-inch pieces of 2.5-inch wide ribbon
- One 12-inch piece of 2.5-inch wide ribbon
- One 6-inch piece of 2.5-inch wide ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Create a Loop: Hot glue the edges of your 12-inch and 14-inch ribbon to create two loops.
- Glue Them Together: Add a drop of glue to the middle of your larger loop before placing the smaller one on top.
- Accordion Fold: Place your other 14-inch ribbon underneath your glued loops and pinch them together in the middle.
- Secure Your Bow: Wrap and twist the pipe cleaner over the folded parts in the middle to keep all of the pieces together.
How to Make a Bouquet Bow (For Either a Wreath or Present)
- Three 20-inch pieces of 2.5-inch wide ribbon
- Three 20-inch pieces of 2.5-inch wide ribbon in a different pattern
- Three 20-inch pieces of 1.5-inch wide ribbon
- Make a Loop: Take one of the ribbons and measure down 12 inches. Hold the spot in place before folding your ribbon in half to create a loop.
- Repeat and Combine: Follow the first step for all of your ribbons and accordion fold them together. Keep your thumb in the middle to hold all of the ribbons together.
- Add a Bit of Fluff: Move your pieces around and fluff them up to create your desired look.
- Keep Them Secure: Wrap the zip tie around the middle pieces to keep your ribbons together.
- Trim: Remove part of the zip tie so it doesnât stick out.
Tip: Cut the ends of your ribbons diagonally or in A.V. for a different look. You can also cover the pipe cleaner with pieces of excess ribbon for a cleaner look.

Making a full and elegant classic bow is simple, and you probably already have all of the materials you need. We'll show you how to make a bow in just four steps. We're also sharing our editor-tested tips for creating simple bows perfectly every time.
How to Make a Classic Bow
- Cut 15 inches of ribbon.
- Form two large loops.
- Cross the right loop over the left and bring the left loop under and through.
- Pull the loops tight.

Likely one of the first bows you learned to tie, the classic bow is still a timeless gift topper . Our steps below explain how to make a bow out of ribbon perfectly every time. We recommend a double-sided ribbon like silk ribbon ($4, Target ) or grosgrain ribbon ($3, Target ) to achieve the best results.
Step 1: Cut Ribbon
Making pretty ribbon bows is so simple you might decide to skip store-bought from now on. Use fabric scissors ($16, Michaels ) to cut about 15 inches of ribbon for a medium-size bow. Being careful not to twist the ribbon, fold it back and forth over itself, forming two loops at the top and one loop in the bottom center. Think about the bunny ear trick for tying shoelaces you learned as a kid.
Step 2: Create Loops
Once you've made the bunny ears, cross the right loop over the left loop, creating a third small loop where the bases meet. Make sure the tails are equal lengths and flat. This will help when it comes time to trim your simple bow.
Step 3: Fold Loops
Fold what is now the left loop down behind the right loop and through the bottom loop.
Editor's Tip: If you're using a wire-edged ribbon ($5, Michaels ), be sure the edges stay smooth so the finished bow lays flat and looks polished.
Step 4: Trim Bow
Pull the top loops taut to form a knot in the center of the bow. Trim the tails and notch the ends. Tug gently on the loops of the bow and tails to even out each side, then finesse your bow to any size and shape you like. It's OK if it doesn't look perfect, you can always pull the bow apart and start again! You've got your gift all wrapped up and ready to go. All it needs is a pretty bowâand tying a ribbon bow around the box will give you a nicer, fancier feel than using a stick-on bow. Weâll show you how to tie a basic ribbon bow as well as how to create a diagonal bow and a fancy woven look around your gift box!
Tying a Basic Bow
- Itâs better to leave more ribbon hanging off the side than too little. You can always cut it shorter later.
- If your ribbon has a right and wrong side, you may have to twist it twice so that you don't see the wrong side of the ribbon.
- Place your thumb against the twisted part to keep it secure as you wrap the ribbon around the back.
Tying Ribbon Diagonally
- Keep your thumb over the ribbon on the top left corner so that it doesn't fall off.
Creating a Woven Look
- For a unique look, consider using two pieces of thin ribbon, and two pieces of slightly wider ribbon. You can also use two contrasting colors instead.
- Thick and/or wired ribbon is not a good choice. Use thin satin or balloon ribbon for best results.
- If you used different widths and/or colors, be sure to alternate them.
- Make sure that you are only taping the top ribbon to the bottom ribbon; don't tape the ribbons to the box itself.
- You can also use glue dots (found in the scrapbooking aisle of an arts and crafts store) instead of double-sided tape.
- Once again, keep the ribbons spaced no more than Âź inch (0.64 centimeters) apart.
- For a nicer touch, weave the short ribbons through the long ribbons on the back, just like you did for the front.

To tie a ribbon around a box, start by draping the ribbon horizontally across the top of the box with 4-8 inches left hanging to the side for the bow. Then, pull the long end of the ribbon under the box and back up to the top, crossing it with the short end so both ends are lying vertically on the box. Next, pull the ribbon under the box and back up to the top so youâve made plus signs on the bottom and the top. You can then wrap both ends of the ribbon under the center and pull them up into a knot. Cut the long end to the length of the short end so your bow will be even, then fold both ends into loops, cross them, and tie them into a bow. Big bows look beautiful. There is no denying that. They are used in inumerous ways – on dresses, on bags, on Christmas trees, on presents, to bring on a quaint charm or a striking look.They do stand out, because of their size as well as their beauty.Â
You can make a giant bow in 2 ways . The No-sew method and the sew method. Whichever way you choose, the secret of a beautifully large bow that hold its shape is interfacing. If you donot use interfacing and if you have a loose weave / medium weave fabric the bow will look lifeless. With interfacing (iron on) the bow will have the needed stability and stay upright. No more droopy big bows. If you donot like the look of interfacing, choose a stiff fabric for making large bows. Â
No sew method of making the bowÂ
Cut out the fabric piecesÂ
Decide on the width of the bow you want and the length.
A rough calculation for the pieces for the large bowÂ
Cut a piece of fabric – width of the bow you want * 3 = length of the fabric. This is an approximate calculation. If you want long tails you can increase the length.Â
Here I am taking 16 inch wide fabric . so have taken 48 inch long fabric. (You can increase or decrease this according to length of the bow you want or the tails )
Cut the interfacing ; width = 1/2 of the width of the bow fabric ; length = same as the bow fabric ( or lesser if you want the tails to be floppy rather than stiff ; in which case the length of interfacing should be taken as the width of the bow only and should be adhered to the middle of the bow fabric)
Keep the interfacing in the middle of the bow fabric, sticky side up.Â
Bring down the side edge of the bow fabric to the middle. Press with an iron so that the interfacing will adhere to the turned fabric
Do the same for the other side
You have the bow fabric interfaced and ready to be tied.
Fold the piece by the middle. Tie a string some distance from the fold. I have taken it as 8″ which is half the width of the bow I want.Â
Open up the fold as in the picture below
Open up the tail pieces as well
Now tie the bow in the middle with another string
You need another fabric piece to conceal the middle string. Fold a small piece of fabric (edges to the middle ) . Use this piece to tie around the center of the bow. Glue in place ( this is a no-sew bow otherwise I would have said ‘stitch in place’, which is what I would prefer). If it is for a christmas tree or something you can use a pin to hold the piece in place
Make a large Bow – sewing method
For this bow you have to cut 3 pieces for the bow and then another long strip for the tails.
One piece is for the front of the bow. This should be taken 1″ all around more than what you want the bow to be.
Here I have taken a piece of fabric of width 14 inch and length 20 inch. This will make a bow of about 13 inch width and 20 inch length.Â
Interface the backside of this fabric. Press with hot iron so that the interfacing is fixed in place
 Take 2 more fabric pieces with the dimensions . Width = 14 inch ( same as the earlier piece) length – half of the bow fabric length + 1/2 inch.
Take these two back pieces, stack them together and stitch along one edge ( the 14 inch edge) leaving a 2 inch gap in the middle unstitched
Open this up. Press the seam allowance open. You will get a small hole in the middle of the seam.
Keep this piece on top of the bow top fabric, both rightsides together. Pin in place and stitch along the outside edge with a 1/2 inch seam allowance
Clip the corner seam allowance – for neat turning
Turn the bow piece inside ou through the hole in the seam.
Make the tails. You can use large ribbons as tails. Use more than two tails if you have narrow ones.
To make the tails with fabric, Take a long piece of fabric for the tails( if you want tails) the width should be double the width of the final tails and length should be double the length you want for each tail.Â
Fold the fabric by the center ( right sides inside) . Stitch the side edges together ; donot stitch 2 inch in the middle of this strip. After you have sewn from the edges , turn the strip inside out
Alternatively you can cut the ends of the tails at an angle for a different look.Â
Use a string to tie the bow by the middle. Tie the tails as well in the back. Then use a fabric strip as used earlier to conceal the tie.Â

How to Make Hair Bows (4 Easy Tutorials with Cute Designs)
Wanna learn how to make hair bows at home? In this article, we showed 4 ways to make ribbon hair bows with different design patterns. Let’s make your hair look luscious with one of these cute hair bows.
Back in 2012, my friend and I randomly decided to start our own little business. The first thing that came into our minds was handmade jewelry pieces and accessories. We already had some satin ribbons so we thought of making ribbon hair bows. And that was the first time I (along with my friend) made hair bows. We made quite some profit from our small business and the ribbon hair bows were a hit! In today’s tutorial, I’m sharing the exact technique of the hair bows that I followed and still do.Â
The pattern and design possibilities of ribbon hair bows are endless! You can make hair bows from ribbons of all sizes, patterns, types, and colors. All you need to do is learn the basic ribbon hair bow making technique and you’re good to go.
Things Youâll Need to Make Hair Bows
- Satin Lace – 2 inches wide, 1 inch wide
How to Make Hair Bows with Ribbon
Here you will find 4 hairbow design patterns. The first instruction is bigger than others as we explain everything in detail. The rest are brief since the main concept is more or less similar.
Hairbow Design 1: Basic Necktie BowÂ
Step 1: preparing the base pieces.
We will need 2 pieces of 2 inches wide satin lace for the basic bow pattern. Measure and cut out 9 inches and 1-inch pieces from the selected satin lace. Use a lighter or candle to slightly burn the cut-edges of the satin pieces to secure the edge fibers.
Step 2: The Base Folding
Take the big piece of the prepared satin ribbon and make a loop with it. Simply, join the open edges and overlap a cm of both edges.
Step 3: Stitching the Open Edges
Prepare needle and thread. Work a running stitch along the overlapped edges of the ribbon loop.
Keeping the stitched part in the middle, now flip the ribbon loop to the other side. Flatten the middle part and keep the piece even on all sides.
Create small and even accordion folds along the middle part of the ribbon loop. While creating the accordion folds, make sure to keep the open edges of the ribbon loop aligned.
Stitch the accordion folded center with the attached needle and thread. Tie a tight knot when you’re done stitching the center.
Now, take the small satin ribbon piece. Fold the 1-inch side from both sides. This small folded piece will be the center of the ribbon bow that we’re making.
Nicely wrap the thin ribbon piece around the center of the bow pattern, this will cover the center stitches. Stitch the
Ribbon Hair Bow Design 2: Fancy Butterfly Hair Bow
For this hair bow pattern, you will need a 2 inches wide ribbon and a 1-inch wide ribbon. Measure and cut out 9 inches from the 2 inches wide ribbon and 11 inches long piece from the 1-inch wide ribbon. Also, cut out a 1-inch piece from either ribbon. Follow the basic folding and stitch the overlapped parts as we did before.
The accordion folding part in the center and attaching the center ribbon is the same for this pattern as well.
Ribbon hair Bow Design 3: Boutique Hair Bow
For this hair bow pattern, take a 1-inch wide ribbon. Measure and cut out two pieces of 9 inches long ribbon and a 1-inch piece. Stitch the 2 pieces along the middle separately.
Create folds in the center of the stitched ribbons and then join them together in the center. Attach the center part as we did for the previous ones.
Ribbon hair Bow Design 4: Double Layered Necktie Bow
For the 4th design, we’re using a 2 inches wide ribbon and a 1-inch wide ribbon. Measure and cut out 9 inches long piece from both ribbons and cut out a 1-inch piece from either of them. Place the 1-inch wide ribbon along the middle of the 2 inches wide ribbon and then form the ribbon loop. Stitch the overlapped parts by making sure that both ribbons are stitched nicely.
The next steps are just as same as the basic ones.
Tips for Beginners: Things to Remember When Making Ribbon Hair Bows
Here are some tips if youâre having difficulty making the ribbon hair bows. Please know that we’re showing how to make hair bows from satin ribbon in today’s tutorial, so we’ll share the tips as per our tutorial and supplies.
- Measure and cut out a ribbon of double the size of the required bow length.
- You can use satin bows of all widths to make hair bows from them. But 2 inches or more are best for a nice and classic bow pattern.
- If you’re using a needle, use matching threads to stitch. We used white thread to make sure that the thread is visible on the tutorial.
- Use a lighter or candle to burn the cut-edges of the ribbons before making the bows. This will secure the edge fibers of the ribbons.
- Keep all the stitches on one side (which is the backside of the bow pattern). You can add a clip or hairband to the backside to cover the stitched parts.

How to Make a Bow with Thin Ribbon Step 1: Take a long ribbon to make the bow Lay the ribbon on a flat surface or floor and cut the ribbon with a scissor. It is always better to use more length than you need so that you have enough ribbon to tie it. You can cut the extra part later.
It's easiest to form the first loop before cutting the ribbon from the spool. The size and thickness of your loop will determine the size of your bow.
