Medical Assistant Cover Letter Checklist

An effective medical assistant cover letter should have these five main elements:

1. Heading.  The heading should include your contact information, the date you wrote the letter and the recipient’s name and address. Make this section more attractive by using a pre-formatted template.

2. Salutation.  If you know the name of the person doing the hiring, address that person by name (e.g., “Dear Ms. Johnson”). If the job advertisement doesn’t mention the name of the hiring manager, use a generic salutation. “Dear Hiring Manager” is an appropriate choice.

3. Introduction.  Get the hiring manager interested in what you have to say by writing a compelling introduction. Provide some information about your background and explain why you’re interested in the job.

4. Body paragraphs.  The body paragraphs are the “meat” of your cover letter. These paragraphs should include details on your education, skills, professional certifications and work experience. Consider adding a bulleted list to break up the text and make it easier to read.

5. Closing.  A strong closing includes a call to action — a request that the hiring manager contact you to schedule an interview. To draw extra attention from the hiring manager, add a P.S. below your signature that includes one final achievement you want them to notice.

Introduction

The introduction is one of the most important sections of a cover letter because it’s your first opportunity to grab the hiring manager’s attention. This section should explain why you’re interested in the job and what you would bring to the role in a clear, compelling way.

To convince the hiring manager to keep reading, pick one of your top achievements listed on your resume and weave it into your introduction. Make sure the selected achievement is measurable and demonstrates your ability to excel in the role. Be specific instead of writing generic statements about how many years you’ve been working or what job duties you’ve performed.

Transcribing physician orders with 98.5% accuracy is one of my greatest achievements as a medical assistant. I look forward to applying the same attention to detail to the senior medical assistant role at Big Apple Primary Care.

I’d be a good medical assistant because I have five years of experience.

Body Paragraphs

The body paragraphs of your cover letter should position you as a skilled professional who is excited about the job opening. You can start by explaining why you’re interested in working for the organization and what excites you about the position. It’s important to be specific, as generic statements won’t persuade the hiring manager to keep reading.

The accomplishments you list in the body paragraphs should relate to factors such as your education, work experience, and professional skills. For each accomplishment, provide a measurable outcome that demonstrates you have the knowledge and skills to succeed in the healthcare industry. Avoid the temptation to simply copy a list of skills or job duties from your resume.

After 10 years as a medical assistant for a busy pediatric practice, I have what it takes to excel in the same role at a multi-physician primary care clinic. I have always admired Big Apple Primary Care for its proactive approach to patient care, and I’m confident that my focus on patient satisfaction would benefit the practice. My successes in my current role include:

I have been working as a medical assistant for 10 years. I would like to work for Big Apple Primary Care because I enjoy working with patients of all ages.

In my current role, I have a wide range of duties, including taking vital signs and submitting orders for lab tests and X-rays.

Finish your medical assistant cover letter strong with a closing that persuades the hiring manager to contact you to schedule an interview. Don’t just summarize your skills and experience — ask the hiring manager to take action. Avoid generic statements that do little to persuade the hiring manager to move you up to the next stage of the hiring process.

To be even more persuasive, include a P.S. line below your signature. The P.S. should highlight a major achievement that you want the hiring manager to know about. Including this statement in your closing gives you one more opportunity to wow the hiring manager with your accomplishments and end on a high note.

I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and discuss my qualifications in more detail. Please contact me by telephone at (555) 555-1212 or by email at [email protected] to schedule an interview.

Jamie Smith

P.S. I’d love to tell you more about how I implemented a new EHR software, reducing charting errors by 47% in just six months.

Thank you for taking the time to review my application. I look forward to hearing from you about this position.

Dear [Hiring Manager Name],

Getting 7 commendations for efficiency as a CMA at MedFast was a nice achievement. But it was easy for me because I take a lot of joy in being part of a smooth, efficient system. That's why your search for a new CMA at Big Bean Medical Clinic has me so excited.

How to Write a Medical Assistant Cover Letter

Learning how to put together a cover letter for the specific job(s) you want will help you land more interviews.

A medical assistant helps out with a little bit of everything around a doctor’s office, and that makes it an in-demand position. But medicine is also a field with a high barrier to entry, so getting hired is difficult.

Employers need medical assistants who perform well on both the administrative and clinical sides of their work. Prove that’s you with a focused, clear medical assistant cover letter.

To help your application stand out, here are three tips for writing a strong medical assistant cover letter:

1. Highlight your medical assistant skills

In a field as high stakes as medicine, employers need to know you have the necessary medical assistant skills to thrive. Although they are also listed on your resume, expand on the most impressive ones on your cover letter.

Not only is getting medical assistant skills an achievement worth highlighting, but also hiring managers won’t call you in if they think you don’t know how to do what they need for their patients.

Here are some critical medical assistant skills to work into your cover letter:

Also, mention your relevant degrees and certifications. A Diploma in Medical Assisting Services, like in this sample, or a CPR certification makes it clear that you’re educated and have passed a set of quality standards.

Although many medical assistant skills are technical skills , you should also highlight your people skills to show that you have a good bedside manner. Your whole application, in fact, should balance the necessary hard skills with soft skills to prove that you can do it all.

2. Tailor your medical assistant cover letter to the job post

Every medical assistant job is different based on what the office requires and the state allows. That makes it a bad idea to send the same cover letter to every open position in the first place. But also, when you tailor each one to the job at hand, hiring managers take notice and see that you’re the perfect fit.

Scan the job listing for the requirements the employer has included, and then address them in your cover letter with examples of your accomplishments in those areas.

At the same time, don’t waste space with jobs or certifications that are irrelevant. List them on your medical assistant resume , but if an employer doesn’t need someone who can draw blood, don’t include that skill.

3. Include strong medical assistant action verbs

Hiring managers want to find employees who go beyond their basic set of tasks at work. So instead of filling your cover letter with descriptions of what you were responsible for, use strong action verbs to show how you made a difference in your previous positions. It’ll better highlight your accomplishments and catch the employer’s attention.

Some examples of relevant medical assistant action verbs are:

Employers love action verbs like these because they demonstrate that you don’t just know what to do in an office, but you work to make their lives (and their patients’ lives) easier.
