An article is an expression of one’s thoughts on an issue or a subject logically and coherently written in meaningful paragraphs. Writing an article is a challenging task. It needs creativity, good vocabulary, good knowledge of the subject and skill to organise ideas.
Purpose: To focus on issues of social concern, narrating an event, description of a place, etc.
Points To Remember
- The title should catch the attention of the reader.
- Begin with a striking opening sentence which addresses the readers and gets them interested in the topic.
- Present a strong argument for your ideas supporting it with evidence or elaboration.
- Use linking devices (however, therefore, although, even though, in order to, etc) to make the composition appear a whole.
- Introduce a new point at the beginning of each paragraph that follows, to strengthen your ideas.
- Develop your ideas as much as you can to make them interesting and substantial.
- Conclude with your strongest point.
- Use passive voice, emotive language, rhetorical questions to provide a specific effect.

A girl child is like a princess who is born into a family to liberate them. She is also like a Goddess, through whom next generation springs up. A girl child can be compared to many gt.eat things, but our society does not believe that a girl gives birth to a prosperous nation. People prefer to have a male child born in their family. Some of the people in the urban areas get female fetus aborted while in rural areas, where people do not have the facility of ultrasound, people kill the girl child after birth. It’s a very cruel act and hard, to believe, but it is happening in our country, in a larger magnitude than we can imagine.
Equality is a Fundamental Right, but where is the gender equality when one million girls are killed every year before birth itself. It’s high time that we all get together and save the girl child in India as time is running out. The disastrous consequences of the disturbed boy-girl ratio is very much round the corner. Soon a time will come when boys will not find girls to get married. Girls will simply vanish from sight. To prevent this from happening, we must put an end to this social evil of killing the girl child whether in the womb or outside.
A small step taken today will definitely become a giant leap tomorrow. We have to create an awareness in the society about the sad state of girls in Indian society. We can also highlight the achievements of successful Indian women in different fields. This might change the attitude of society, against women.
Question 2: Parents today are facing a major problem with their children. They waste most of their time on Facebook and other social networking sites, with the result that their studies and other important activities are neglected. When we talk about the pros and cons then there are always two sides of a coin. Let us take the positive aspect of networking first. Social networking sites spread information faster than any other media. These sites are the best source of news. These sites help solve crimes more quickly. The best advantage of social networking sites is for the students. They help a student to do better at school. They can easily discuss educational topics and assignments. Thus, they can score better grades in academics. It also improves relationships and increases friend circle. People can connect with their family and friends living abroad through skype and e-mail facilities. It helps to stay in touch with friends, they cannot meet regularly.
Social network helps to spread false and unreliable information, which may harm groups, communities, and even nations. Students waste time by playing games and socialising. Therefore, they tend to score lower grades in academics, which leads to stress, misunderstandings, and arguments. Children spend less time in face-to-face interactions and this leads to self-centered personalities and behaviour. A person may suffer from loneliness, depression, anxiety, and general distress. To sum up we can say that it’s wise to tread carefully and be aware of the pros and cons before we indulge.

In modern times, the problem of being overweight is quite prominent. Children are suffering from this disorder, which was once considered to be meant for adults only.
These days, children lead a sedentary lifestyle with very little physical exercise. Technological advancement has reduced physical exercise among children. They spend most of the time watching television, playing video games or on social networking sites. The second major cause of obesity is the junk food that the children eat. This includes burgers, pizzas, noodles, and aerated drinks. This type of food is easily available and has a good taste, but it does much harm to the health of the child. Children love to eat chips, chocolates, and ice-creams instead of a balanced diet. Junk food is high in calories and results in obesity.
It’s about time that parents keep a watch on their child’s health. They should feed them with milk, juices, and fruits. Moreover, children should be encouraged to do physical exercise. Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in average surface temperature of the earth and its oceans. The average temperature of the earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8 °C over the past 100 years.
The increased volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture and other human activities, are believed to be the primary sources of the global warming that has occurred over the past 50 years. The temperatures could further increase between 1.4 and 5.8 °C by the year 2100. Changes resulting from global warming may include rising sea levels due to the melting of the polar ice caps, as well as an increase in the occurrence and severity of storms and other severe weather events.
There exists a real risk of a global catastrophe if global warming is left unchecked. It includes oceanic acidification leading to the mass death of coral and plankton, the basis of the Earth’s food chain,- the total collapse of the tropical rainforests,- an ice sheet of the size of Greenland or Antarctica falling into the ocean, causing a near-instantaneous rise in worldwide sea levels of at least five meters.
Solutions to such a vast problem require the capability to face the challenges posed, as the issues raised by global warming begin to be seriously addressed.

Article Writing
An article is a piece of non-fiction prose writing especially meant for newspapers and magazines. It is helpful to test the students’ skills in expressing their ideas, organization of their thoughts, planning, presentation of their ideas in a chronological way, comprehending their ideas, and finally arriving at a conclusion.
While writing the article, make sure that the ideas are presented in a planned and systematic way. Avoid using vocabulary with which you are not very familiar. Use simple but effective language. Follow the word limit given in the question.
Article Writing Format
Title/Heading : Always begin the article with a title or heading. It should be eye-catching but short consisting of not more than four to five words. It should arouse the interest of the reader (and he) should come to know what the article is about after reading the title. So that he may be mentally prepared for the topic.
By Line : Write the by line i.e., the name of the person who has written the article. This name is generally given in the question. It can be written in the left-hand corner of the article or in the end also.
Introduction : Try to begin the article with a proverb or quote which catches the attention of the reader. The proverb or quotation must be in accordance with the title of the article. Try to introduce the topic while keeping in mind what, where, and when (related to the topic), e.g., if you are writing on natural disasters, you should write what are Natural Disasters in the introductory passage.
Body : The body of the article includes the details of the reasons, advantages, disadvantages, effects, etc.
Conclusion : This paragraph concludes the article by giving possible solutions, hopes, and wishes.

How to Write an Article Step by Step- Eye-catching Title – This is the most important part of your article. Give your article a title that catches the attention of the reader. If you choose a topic burning It should be relevant to them. Beginning – Begin your article with a quotation or popular poetic line that supports your topic most relevantly. Let the readers be satisfied that you are going to write something new and relevant. Content- A vast ground for your creativity comprising reasons, effects, the present state of affairs, etc. This part must include.
“We all moan and groan about the loss of the quality of life through the destruction of our ecology, and yet each one of us, in our comfortable little ways contributes daily to that destruction. Man’s greed and hunger have no limits. The ruthless and cruel hands of man have scorched and maimed the planet Earth. Progress has come at a very high price. Unplanned urbanization and industries have resulted in the degradation of the environment and ecology. If this degradation and destruction are not checked immediately, we will not be able to save this planet. Let us act before it is too late. 2. Look at the picture given below. It depicts the massive jam of vehicles reflecting the chaotic state of traffic in metropolitan cities. Taking clues from the picture and using your own ideas, write an article depicting the existing state of traffic on roads and suggesting ways and means improve the conditions.
The concerned authorities must find out ways and means to bring order and system on the roads in metros. I would therefore say that this earning and spending is not the real purpose of education.

To such questions, you generally reply that you want to become a doctor or an engineer or a leader, so on and so forth. Yet, think for a while. Is it the aim of life or a means of livelihood ? 3. Drinking Water
Everybody knows that water is very important for our life. We need water for cleaning, agriculture and in cooking. However, its most important use is drinking. The drinking water must be pure. If it is not so, it may cause disease and death. So there are many ways by which we purify our water. The simplest way is to boil the water before drinking. These days many water purifiers are also available in the market. But these are costly gadgets and everyone cannot afford them.
4. Co-Education
Co-education is becoming more and more acceptable in the country. It has many advantages. Some people say that it enhances the performance of the students. It also makes them more disciplined. Perhaps the greatest advantage of co-education is that it teaches students how to behave with the opposite sex.

The format and style of an article may vary depending on the topic or author. The CBSE English curriculum includes article writing in all grades. The article writing sections are usually worth 5 to 10 points. To achieve high marks in English exams, students must understand the article writing format. CBSE Article Writing Format: Class 10 and Class 12

- Part 2 – Byline

Part 1 – Heading : The article’s heading should be engaging and not exceed more than five to six words. Make sure the heading does not have any spelling mistakes or grammar errors. Do not use unnecessary punctuation marks in the title. The heading carries 1 mark in article writing. To be precise, the article’s heading should contain the gist of the topic. The reader should be able to tell what information they will get from reading that article.
Part 2 – Byline : A Byline is nothing but the name of the person who is writing the article. The person’s name will be generally given in the question paper itself. If the person’s name is not provided in the article, then write your name. Note: Candidates are not supposed to mention their personal details while attempting the answers to the exam.
Part 3 – Article Body : The body is the main part of the article in CBSE format, which carries more weightage. Generally, the body of the article consists of at least three to four paragraphs. Paragraph 1: Paragraph 1 is the introduction paragraph. It should be accurate. Precisely explain what the article is talking about. Try giving some quotations or facts to excite the interest of the readers. Keep the language simple. Paragraphs 2 & 3: Paragraphs 2 and 3 must come with a complete analysis of the subject matter in question. They must include the following factors: Types : Here, the writer must analyse and explain the different kinds of existing problems. Current Scenario: Here, the writer must explain the problem’s current situation and the actions taken to correct them. This may include advantages or disadvantages of the problem, etc. Cause and Effect Relationship: Develop the cause and effect relationship by supporting facts or data. Here writer may also write the consequences.
Paragraphs 3 & 4: Paragraph 3 or 4 are commonly known as the conclusion paragraphs of the article format. It is important to conclude the article that you have started. Never leave an article open-ended. The conclusion paragraph should speak about the problems raised and what actions are taken to better the problem. Paragraphs 3 and 4 should be precise and clear.

When a student has to attempt a question on Article writing, he has to follow the article writing format by CBSE. Here you can see the article writing format in detail.
The format of an article consists of the following parts –
- By line, and
- HEADING – The heading should be catchy and in not more than 5-6 words. You can go as creative as you want with this one just make sure you do not devote too much time on it in the exam.
- BY LINE – It refers to the name of the person writing the article. It is generally given in the question. If not given, then do not write your personal details.
(NOTE- You are not supposed to mention any of your personal details while attempting the answers in the exam.)
- BODY – It is the main part of your writing piece. It generally consists of 3-4 paragraphs.
- PARAGRAPH 1 : It is always prescribed that you begin with a short introduction of the topic; it’s meaning to be precise. Briefly tell what the article is about giving some quotations or startling facts to arouse the interest of the readers.
- PARAGRAPH 2 or PARAGRAPH 2&3: Now this part can be written in either one or two paragraphs. You are required to do a complete analysis of the subject matter in question. It may include-
- TYPES – In how many forms does the problem exist? You are required to mention the various possible types (if it exists).
- CURRENT SCENARIO – Then you need to explain the current situation, the problems (if any) and whether after any corrective actions, betterment in the situation has been observed or not.
- It may include advantages/ disadvantages depending upon the topic in question.
- CAUSE AND EFFECT RELATIONSHIP – Develop the cause and effect relationship by supporting it with facts or data. You may also write the consequences.
- Any other relevant and related information.
- PARAGRAPH 3 or PARAGRAPH 4: The conclusion. It is the concluding paragraph. It is important to conclude what you’ve started. Never leave an article open-ended. Now, it is to be remembered that wherever you elaborate a problem, you always have to mention the steps being taken to improvise the situation and suggest a few solutions as well. Predictions and personal problems may be included. This paragraph needs to be short and precise. Here also, you could add some glitter to your art piece with some quotes.

Article Writing Class 12 – In an examination, nothing is written purposelessly. Clarity of purpose will ensure clarity in the choice of style and vocabulary.
Article writing for CBSE Class 12 comes as a very long answer-type question carrying a weightage of 05 marks.
Two Very Long Answer Questions containing internal choice, to be answered in 120-150 words have to be attempted. The questions will be based on any of the following –

- Plan before you pen- it is important that you follow a sequence. Jot down the points at the back of your answer sheet and ensure a proper sequence of ideas. Introduce, Analyse, Suggest and conclude.
- It is possible that you have too many points or very few points. When you have a lot of varied points, it is better you choose a few best ones and write a line or two on each. In case you have very few already, explain them in at least two-three lines each.

For writing a good article the students are advised to keep the following points in mind.
- Study carefully the hints or points given in the verbal input.
- Arrange the hints given in the order you want to develop them for writing the article.
- You may have some new ideas or views about the subject or the issues raised in the article. Coordinate your own ideas with the hints given in the input and rearrange them in a logical order.
- Develop each point in a systematic and logical manner.
- Your composition should not be sketchy. Every sentence should be linked with the rest into a single whole.
- The first few sentences should introduce the topic/main idea/main issue of the article. The last few sentences should state your conclusion on the topic or issue.
- Don’t exceed the given length. Your article may not be too short or too long of the given length–200 words.
- In a long composition, it is always better to divide or arrange your article into suitable paragraphs.
- Always use a simple and grammatically correct language. Your expressions and phrases should fit into the scheme of your writing.
- Your composition should be meaningful, brief and to the point. Unnecessary or superfluous details or explanations must be avoided.

The earth is made of 70 percent water. But not all of this water is drinkable. Water is the most important natural resource, and we need it to survive on this planet. The reason that there is life on the planet Earth is that it has water. However, it is also true that the increasing human population has put a lot of pressure on our existing water bodies. The quality of our water is deteriorating, and this is causing water pollution.
The actual origin of water pollution is not civilization, but the Industrial Revolution. As it spread to the other parts of the world, so did water pollution. At present, this problem has taken a serious turn as even the oceans have been polluted by man. In simple terms, water pollution! refers to the addition of pollutants like sewage, chemical products, oil, factory smoke, plastics, and waste from other human activities in our water bodies such as oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds, and other inland waters in large quantities. This quantity is large enough to affect the health of the water animals and plants and the people living around these water bodies.
We are facing a crisis today, but we are not aware of the extent to which it can impact us. According to a report by Centre for Science and Environment, nearly 80% of sewage in Indian cities is left untreated and is dumped into our water bodies. This reaches the groundwater, and the result is contaminated water resources.
Chemical fertilizers are another reason for increasing water pollution. At the same time, chemicals are released into water from factories. Oil spills and city waste also add to water pollution.
Many believe that civilization will inevitably lead to water pollution and that it is a necessary evil. But we need to ascertain the cost that the future generations will have to pay for the rising pollution. Water pollution affects the ecosystem of marine life and the people who live around these contaminated water bodies. It affects the environment adversely, thus reducing the quality of our lives.
There is a need to wake up to these harmful affects, and have effective control measures in place. We must educate people about the causes and effects of water pollution. Public awareness is the key to control water pollution. Overfishing needs to be checked so that the marine life remains intact. Tough penalties should be levied on factories that pour their waste into the rivers or sea. The disposal of factory waste should be kept in check. This means that the polluters should be made responsible for cleaning up the pollution they have caused. International laws on water bodies need to be stricter. Neighboring countries that share common water resources need to work out a common solution to reduce water pollution.
We can also take individual actions to tackle the rising levels of water pollution such as using environmentally friendly detergents, reducing the use of plastics, and cleaning beaches by organizing beach-cleaning campaigns. We need to wake up to this grave issue before we run out of clean drinking water.

A notice is a written formal announcement intended for a large group of people. A notice follows a very precise form of writing where just the key points about the concerned topic are mentioned. Any extra details are avoided in notice writing. Since notice writing is a way to reach a large number of people in a short time, it’s important that the unnecessary detailing is avoided.
For example, suppose you have to write a notice to inform a group of people about an event. All you have to do is inform people about what the event is about, where and when it will take place, and sign it off with your designation. So how would you write a notice for that? Let’s learn about the format in which notices are written.
Notice writing is the easiest writing piece that students can go for. Just like letters and articles, notice writing too has a particular format. In fact, marks are often allotted for the format itself during evaluation. So if you want to get full marks in notice writing, you have to learn how to design and present a notice that would fulfil its purpose.
- Name of the Organisation – The first thing to write is the name of the organisation/school/college from where the notice is being issued. This will help people identify who has published or put out the notice.
- Title – The title for any notice writing is the word “Notice” itself. This is to let the readers know that they are about to read a ‘Notice’.
- Date – The next important thing that students must keep in mind while drafting the notice is to write the date. The date is written in the left corner of the notice. The date helps the readers to understand when the notice was issued. Writing dates also helps to use it as a reference for future use.
- Heading – The heading of the notice refers to the subject of the notice. In the heading, the students have to write briefly about what the notice is about. This helps the readers to have an idea about what the notice might consist of.
- Body – The body contains the main content of the notice. But one must keep in mind that the body of the notice should be kept short and informative. Only necessary information would be written in the body, which is usually written in passive voice.
- Signature and Designation – The notice ends with the signature of the person who composes the notice and their designation (in capital letters). It helps the readers to understand who has issued the notice.

- No details – Notice writing is not about details but about the exact information you need the readers to know. While writing a notice, one must always keep it short yet informative.
- Correct Heading – Since the notice is meant for a large audience, it’s important that they understand what the notice is about. For that, the writer has to wisely choose the notice’s heading.
- Format – It is very crucial that the writer maintains the format of the notice. Make sure you use a large font size for the name of the organisation (probably 14), a smaller font for the next two lines containing the term ‘notice’ and what the notice is about. See to it that you use capital letters for ‘notice’. This is done in order to draw attention to it. The body of the notice can be written in a comparatively smaller font size (probably 11 or 12). End the notice with the signature of the individual issuing the notice followed by their designation in block letters.
- Clarity – Even if notices are meant to be short, you have to make it clear to the readers what the notice wants to convey. If the message of the notice isn’t clear, it might give rise to ambiguity among the readers.

Notice is a written formal announcement for a large group of people.
How to write a notice?
To write a notice, you have to make sure to do the following.
- Write the name of the school/college/institution followed by the heading ‘NOTICE’ in the centre.
- Write the date on the left hand side of the page.
- Mention what the notice is about in the next line. For example, Attendance regularisation.
- Use a salutation if it is particularly intended to an audience.
- In the body of the notice, include the necessary information including time, date, duration and venue. If there is anything that is expected of the audience, mention that as well. However, see to it that you do not write long paragraphs. Keep it short and to the point.
- End the notice with the signature of the person issuing the notice and their designation in block letters on the left hand side of the page.
